@Kathleen, we have reached the date at which mailing in petitions will no longer be useful due to time limitations. Please check back at this website over the course of the week to find out how things went.

I found a Signature Gathering Event Calendar for I-1068 at http://www.seattlefantasy.com/1068/EventCalendar.php which may include some not listed in our Calendar section and has a very nice visual layout. Got it from a link in an article at http://www.mpp.org/states/washington/

The other day I noticed our Volunteer section now has a list of County Coordinators with email addresses in one of the dropdown links. I think that information should also be listed here. There are a lot a places to sign or other opportunities not listed in either section that County Coordinators can inform people about or even create and provide.

I also wish to suggest everyone immediately write letters to the editor of newspapers or other general news media sources that mention http://sensiblewashington.org as a place for people to learn where to sign or how to volunteer to help gather and turn in enough signatures before the deadline to qualify for the ballot. Mention this in online comments on news articles, letters to the editor, stories in political or social justice oriented websites. Make meaningful, relevant comments about the subject but try to include “Sensible Washington”, “sensiblewashington.org”, “Marijuana Reform Act initiative”, plus “legalize marijuana in Washington for adults” and other terms that people wanting to find how to sign or help circulate the initiative or just curious will be using as search terms.

Don’t be shy (but don’t be strident) to mention what little coverage we’ve had generally hasn’t provided this information and has often been slanted to discourage people from getting involved or has unintentionally had such an effect by disparaging the possibility of a of an initiative to qualify for the ballot unless it is financed by big corporations, big organizations or occasionally extremely wealthy individuals. It is very difficult to qualify an intiative that isn’t “bought” but people have the power to do it and we have an initiative the people want on the ballot enough that it can qualify with an all volunteer campaign by ordinary people. That’s newsworthy in itself. A timeline graph I’ve seen somewhere on the internet of google searches for either “marijuana legalization” or “legalize marijuana” certainly indicates I-1068 is newsworthy because of the subject of the initiative. Draw your own conclusions but also consider whether stating them may discourage publication. Media consolidation and cross ownership is an important factor. I suspect newspapers owned by the same companies as TV networks have gotten a significant number of letters about the clearly deliberate silence about David Barstow’s 2009 award of the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting but how many have been published? Has the news media informed you enough to even know what this is about?
    See http://www.democracynow.org/2010/2/24/the_media_lobbying_complex_investigation_exposes and
http://www.democracynow.org/2009/5/8/pentagons_pundits_ny_times_reporter_david. If your conclusions cause you to feel righteous wrath about deliberate censorship through silence, complicity with the drug abuse-industrial complex or such matters, keep calm. Writing an angry, accusatory letter doesn’t seem the likeliest way to get it published to me. Keep any criticism you can’t resist writing limited to relatively neutral statements about why the newspaper or whatever hasn’t covered I-1068 adequately in your opinion. An unpublished letter won’t spread the information we need to spread.

Almost daily someone who signs the petition tells me they’ve been wanting to sign it for so long but haven’t seen anyone with it so they could could sign it.

Use other resources. Be creative. Forward Doug’s email to as many friends in Washington as you can who aren’t definitely opposed to I-1068. A message from a friend may be the nudge someone needs to sign now and study the issue in the months before the election to decide how to vote. Every valid signature helps.

I am ALL for it, legal medical grower and user here. I feel this issue will assist the debt that unemployment has created on Washington State. The harrasment needs to END with people and police. Why can’t pot smokers just be left alone and allowed to smoke up in peace. I for one would like to feel comfort in my own back yard…

The Lake Stevens location isn’t accurate. I called and some kind with a thick accent answered, “Hello, Computer City.” I think the phone # is simply wrong is all.

I live outside the US right now but am registered to vote in Washington State. I won’t be back until August but would like to sign, is it possible for me to just download the petition and mail it to you?

Is there any way I can sign it digitally somehow? I’m out of the state until August.

You need to mention how many people lose their jobs in Washington state every year because of random drug tests. I heard the number is over 40 thousand.

It was very difficult to find where and how to sign up for 1-1068. There needs to be a better link in google that will take you right to this page when you google leaglize marijuana in washington state. This website site is excelent and very imformative and helpful, outstanding but very hard to find online with google search.
